Amelia Herrera

May 15, 1926 — November 25, 2023

Amelia Ysasi Herrera, 97, of Loma Linda, CA passed away peacefully on November 25, 2023.
Amelia was born to Lauro Ysasi and Altagracia Garza Ysasi on May 15, 1926 in Robstown, Texas. Amelia married Esteban “Steve” Alvarado Herrera on July 27, 1947. They had five children, Elda Ann Herrera (Meacham), Hector Steve Herrera, Rene Ysasi Herrera, Rebecca Ysasi Herrera (Kennedy), and Ruth Naomi Herrera (Fassett). Amelia was the anchor of her family, embodying strength, kindness, love and unwavering faith in her Lord Jesus. She loved reading the Bible and sharing the love of Jesus. She always said a prayer when she heard the siren of an ambulance. Amelia read daily devotions with her beloved morning coffee and cookie. She made fresh flour tortillas nearly every day, and had a signature cornbread stuffing that she made for Thanksgiving. She would say that if she had to choose just one thing to eat it would be potatoes because there are so many ways to make them, and her fried papitas were perfect. After raising her children, she generously and always had her door open to her grandchildren which she covered them with love, figuratively and literally. Amelia quilted almost constantly until she couldn’t anymore, using any fabric that could be reused and remade, cutting squares and strips, making stacks, and piecing them together. With every finishing knot she tied by hand she said a prayer for the recipient of the quilt.
Amelia is preceded in death by her parents, Lauro and Altagracia, husband of 65 years, Esteban Herrera, daughter, Elda Ann Meacham, her six older half-siblings: Jose “Pepe” Ysasi, Lauro Ysasi, Jr., Pedro Ysasi, Natividad Ysasi, Maria Ysasi Pena, and Josefina Ysasi Garcia, her four younger siblings: Samuel “Sammy” Ysasi, Elida Ysasi Salas, Beatrice Ysasi, and Raquel Ysasi Rojas, and her sons-in-law Scott Meacham, and Bradley Kennedy.
Amelia is lovingly survived by her children and their families; Hector Herrera (Mary Jane), Rene Herrera (Jane), Rebecca Kennedy, Ruth Fassett (Greg). Amelia is also survived by her eight grandchildren; David Meacham, Daniel Meacham (Manali), Lainie Herrera (Sean), Jordan Herrera (Olivia), Meghan Kennedy (Blake), Rachel Visser (Jason), Kai Fassett and Ethan Fassett as well as her five great grandchildren; Jaden Meacham, Nathan Meacham, Isaac Meacham, Harper Renfroe and Amelia Visser.
