Norma Matousek

June 27, 1925 — November 30, 2017

Norma Matousek, born Norma George, passed away at 92 years of age November 30. A longtime resident of Fontana, California, she had lived there for nearly 60 years following her marriage to Joseph and relocation from Santa Cruz, the town of their youth. Norma led a long and fruitful life, and was at peace when called by the Lord. She is survived by her brother Raymond George, of California; her three children, daughter Patricia of Riverside, son William of Connecticut, son George of Moreno Valley; 5 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Norma was a school teacher, with a notable career spanning more than 40 years. Following her graduation from San Jose State College where she was active in the marching band, Norma began her career in Northern California in the early 1950s, eventually moving into the Fontana School system in 1956. She taught primary education grades at Randall Pepper and Oleander elementary before undergoing specific training as a Special Education teacher in the late 1960s. She would spend the remainder of her teaching career as a dedicated and devoted educator in this area at Live Oak elementary. Norma's passion for teaching and love of children, especially for those with acute needs, made this career choice particularly impactful. She was also active in youth singing and performance programs, serving as director of the youth choir at Live Oak for many years. She was a fervent supporter and board member of Fontana Community Concert Association, and served many years on the selection committee. She was also involved with the Fontana AARPs, and was chaplain for many years.
In her personal life, Norma was a devout Catholic, and an active member of the choir at Resurrection Catholic Church in Fontana. She enjoyed sharing her love of music, and in her youth had recorded classic tunes and held a weekend radio music request program. She loved the outdoors, and spent innumerable weekends at her mountain cottage with her husband Joseph and later with her beloved pets. Norma also loved to travel, and has seen the far corners of the world, initially with her husband, and later with her favorite, trusted travelling companion Pat Alleck. But most of all, she loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren, doting on them, offering sage advice, and maybe getting them into trouble with their parents.
A vigil with rosary will be held Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Ingold Funeral, 8277 Juniper Ave, in Fontana, CA. Interment will be a private family service, at Riverside National Cemetery at a later date, where Norma will be laid to rest alongside her husband. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Norma's name to the Special Olympics of Southern California. Be sure to see if your employer provides matching gifts, and make your donation go even further.
With loving memories, we bid our mother farewell from this world.
